Al Johnson

1986 Special Service Award

Al Johnson was born May 5, 1928 in Flint, Michigan to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Johnson. He attended Clark Elementary and Whittier Jr. High Schools and graduated from Flint Central High School in 1946. While at Central, Johnson competed in football and basketball from 1943-46. He was named to the “All-Valley” Football Team as a center and linebacker in 1944 and 1945, and to the All-State Football Team in 1945. Al was also the co-captain of the 1945 football team.

He graduated with honors from Mott Community College with an Associate Degree in Community Education. Currently serving as President of the Board of Directors for Security Federal Credit Union, a position held since 1980. Served as vice president for five years previous to being elected as president. During the early 1970’s, he held Credit Committee and Credit Committee Chairman positions with the Credit Union. In October, 1960, he was named Basketball Director for the Flint Department of Parks and Recreation, a position held to date. In November, 1974, he was named Softball Director for the Flint Department of Parks and Recreation, a position held to date. Also in November, 1974, he was appointed to another volunteer position, District Softball Commissioner for Genesee and Shiawassee Counties by the Executive Secretary and State Commissioner of M.A.S.A., Walter Balcom.

In July, 1985, he was named Michigan Softball Commissioner of the year at the Annual M.S.A.A. meeting in Petoskey, Michigan and in November, 1985 , he was honored by the Flint City Council and the Department of Parks and Recreation for his long time dedication to the city as Softball Director and being named Michigan Commissioner of the Year.

Al Johnson is a long term Buick employee and very active in U.A.W. Local 599, serving more than twenty years as a District Committeeman. His favorite pastimes are golfing, photography, fishing, attending to house plants, and flowers as well as spending many enjoyable moments in the vegetable garden and maintaining a home putting green. The many hours of involvement with the Flint Department of Parks and Recreation, the Michigan Amateur Softball Association, U.A.W. Local 599 and Security Federal Credit Union has impacted his life immeasurably.

The many friendships and associations made with people throughout Flint, Genesee County and the State of Michigan will be forever a lifetime treasure. However, more importantly, Al treasures the many hours spent with wife Dorothy, sons Vance, Gary and David Dunlap, daughters Jackie Pritchard, Dear Lee Jackson, Crystal Pilgrim, and his six grandchildren, along with son-in-laws Herschel Pritchard, Jr., Ivory Pilgrim, and Garth Jackson.
