Charles grew up on Flint’s south side and attended Stewart Elementary and Whittier Jr. High Schools. The Crouther family moved to Grand Blanc and Charles attended McGrath Jr. High and graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1975.

Sprint medley relay (Gardner, Crouther, Bruce and Thomas). 3.22 world record for five years (out doors). Shuttle Hurdle relay 4×120 yd. 57.3 (Chisholm, Hicks, Wheeler and Crouther). In 1976 and 1978 Charles was named Big Ten Triple Crown Champion and Big Ten Athlete of the year.
