The Flint Northern 1971 and 1972 Men’s Basketball team members include Wayman Britt, James Britt, Tom McGill, Barry Mendeleev, Ron Polk, Ray Bridges, Rick Jones, Dennis Johnson, Steve Hammerburg, Glen Key, Asive Thompson, Matt Rivette, Howard Hughes, Tony Stewart, Tom Jackson, Terry Furlow, Joel Ragland, Mike Yambrick, Mike Sanders, John Ragland, Mike Williams, Sanders Howell and Bob Root.
Led by head coach Bill Frieder the Northern Men’s Basketball team won a state championship in 1971 against Detroit Kettering. In 1972, they finished the season with an undefeated record of 25-0 and won another state championship against Pontiac Central.
The 1972 Northern team was named greatest Flint high school basketball team of all time by mlive.com and The Flint Journal.
