The Flint Northern Boys’ Wrestling Team was a powerhouse on the wrestling mat in 1995. The Vikings were Saginaw Valley Champions, District champion, and Regional Champion. The team fought through much adversity on its way to winning a state championship, but, as always, their perseverance prevailed. The team’s focus and toughness helped it become the 1995 Class A State Wrestling Champions.
At the time, it was only the second time an African American wrestling team had won a state championship in Michigan. The other team to accomplish this was the 1963 Northern team. As a team the Vikings had eight All-State wrestlers, seven of which placed in the top 3 of their weight classes. It had three individual state champions and one individual state runner-up.
