James ”Jimmy” Moore was born and raised in Flint and is one of five sons of Evelyn and Willie Moore. Jimmy lived near Berston Field House where sports was the main activity. He came in contact with many of Flint’s greatest athletes in baseball, basketball and football.
While at Northern, Jimmie compiled an outstanding career in football and baseball. In 1954, his sophomore year, he was All-State Honorable Mention at the Center position. The following season Jimmy was All-City and All-Valley at the Center position.
His accomplishments on the baseball team at Northern and in the American Legion were outstanding. In 1955, as a pitcher, he had a 7-1 record and had the most strikeouts on his team (75) in 46 2/3 innings and pitched a one-hitter to clinch the city title. His career strike-out record against Flint Central was 47 in 29 innings.
In 1956 he had the most strikeouts in the Valley, 75 in 53 innings. He had the most strikeouts in city series game (20), most strikes-outs of two pitchers in a city series game (Jimmy 20 and Walters of F.C. 13) for a record of 33. Jimmy also had the most strikeouts recorded against Central in the school’s history (20).
In his career at Flint Northern he struck out the other side three different times on 10 pitches. In the American Legion District Tournament, he pitched and won a double-header and had 30 strikeouts while recording shutouts in both games.
