Lamarr “Spider” Edwards is a legendary basketball player and bowler from the Flint area.  He earned the nickname “Spider” because of his quick reflexes and was well known around the Flint area in the 1980s and 90s for his athletic ability as well as his trademark Jheri curl hairstyle.

Lamarr never earned a varsity letter for sports in high school but his love for athletics remained and, after high school, he joined the Mott Community College basketball team.  He helped lead MCC to a Michigan Junior Conference title in his freshman season and the team finished ranked eighth in the nation in his sophomore season.

Lamarr continued his college career at Saginaw Valley State College where he became the Great Lakes Conference scoring champion averaging 20 points per game and was named to the NAIA All-American team.

After college, he continued to play basketball in the AAU where he won three AAU National titles in 1990, 1991 and 1992.  In 1992, his AAU team played an exhibition game against the University of Michigan’s “Fab Five” basketball team. In that game, Lamarr scored 29 points and his team beat the Wolverines in overtime.

He built a reputation of being as impressive as many professionals not just in basketball but in bowling as well.  In his bowling career, Lamarr has bowled over 88 300-games, 56 800-series and 22 games with a score of 299.  He made the Flint All-Star team several times and captained the 2003 All-Star team. In 2004, he was inducted into the Flint Bowling Hall of Fame.

Lamarr “Spider” Edwards, you are the true definition of being “Flint Strong!”  You have made Flint proud, welcome to the Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame!
