LaTanga Cox is a proud graduate of Flint Northwestern High School and a trailblazer for women’s basketball in the Flint area. At the center position, Cox dominated on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. She led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 16.2 points per game, while also grabbing 18.5 rebounds per game. This dominance helped her earn the honor of being named first-team All-Valley and first-team All-State. One of her best performances came in a game against Flint Central where Cox scored 21 points and recorded 22 rebounds, in a 53-33 victory.
After her outstanding high school career, Cox accepted an athletic scholarship to Central Michigan University. While at CMU, she helped lead the Chippewas to two Mid- American Conference regular season championships in 1983 and 1984, and two Mid-American Conference tournament championships in 1984 and 1985.
Cox was named the MAC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player in 1984. Her game-high 18 points helped lead the Chippewas to 71-55 MAC championship victory over Toledo. She also racked up many individual accomplishments, including being named first-team All-Mid-American Conference in 1986. Cox finished her CMU career with 1,373 points scored, 1,029 rebounds and 98 blocked shots. She was one of only two players in school history with over 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. Her career still ranks among CMU leaders in rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots.
