Doug was born in Flint and grew up on the south side. He attended Steward Elementary, Whittier Junior High and graduated from Flint Southwestern High School. While at Southwestern, Doug earned six varsity letters in football. He was honorable mention All Saginaw Valley and honorable mention All-State.
Doug’s claim to fame was in the shot put. He won the state championship in the shot put his senior year. When Doug entered the United States Air Force in 1967, he became a member of the track and field team. Doug was champion of shot put at the Knights of Columbus International Track and Field games. He was the shot-put champion at the North Dakota AAU and the Bison Relays shot put champion.
He placed second at the U.S. Air Force worldwide track and field champion- ships. U.S. Air Force worldwide champion shot put. Doug was identified as a potential member of the U.S. Olympian track and field team.
In 1969 Flint Olympian and Canusa Games, Doug broke one of the three oldest Olympian Games records by 3 feet, 3 1/2 inches. He was the district 23 NAJA indoor shot-put champion.
Doug passed away June 22, 2001. He was employed as director at the St. James House A Complete.
