Eddie grew up on Flint’s Southside and attended Clark Elementary, Whittier Junior High and was named Flint Southwestern 1968 Athlete of the Year.
After graduating from Southwestern in 1968, Eddie attended Bowling Green State University. As a member of the track team Eddie tied the school’s record in the 60-yard dash and qualified for the NCAA with a time of 6.1 seconds. Eddie was running track at the same time as Herb Washington (1970 NCAA indoor 60-yard dash champion) and Willie Polk (Nationally ranked sprinter from Texas Southern) Polk and Washington are GFAAHF inductees.
Eddie was voted captain of the Bowling Green State University track team in 1972. In the Midwest U.S. Track & Field Federation meet at Ohio State University, Eddie ran the 60-yard dash with a time of 6.2 seconds setting a new record. Eddie helped Bowling Green win its first Mid-American Conference Championship in track and field. Eddie also ran the 100-yard dash in 9.4 seconds and the 220-yard dash in 21.5 seconds.
